When you need this photo

This page is for anyone applying for a My Number card for the first time, and for those applying online from a phone or computer. There is no need to visit a photo booth or camera shop — a single shot taken at home on your phone works as-is.

It also covers parents applying on behalf of a young child. Children rarely hold a steady, forward-facing pose, so re-shoots are common; but with background handling and head positioning left to the AI, you simply pick the best-looking frame from a few tries and it is shaped to spec.

Where applications go wrong

On a My Number application, the trouble usually comes from the situation, not the spec itself.

How to create it for ¥200

Three steps only: shoot it, let AI handle it, pick it up at a convenience store.

  1. 1

Shoot it head-on with your phone

Stand against a plain wall in a bright room, facing the camera. No hat, a natural expression, eyes straight to the lens. For a child, take a few frames until you get a good one.
  2. 2

AI removes the background and sets head position to 0.1mm

Upload the photo and AI removes the background and detects your face. It adjusts head position to 0.1mm precision to land inside that narrow 32–36mm window — the kind of fine fitting that is hard to nail on a phone.
  3. 3

Print at a convenience store from the QR code in your email

Once payment is done, a QR code and an 8-digit user number arrive by email. At Lawson, FamilyMart, Ministop, and Poplar, just hold the QR code to the multi-copy machine. For 7-Eleven, register the image with netprint first. The print itself is about ¥30 extra.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my glasses on for the application photo?
If the lenses are clear with no reflection or tint, you can apply with them on. But lighting or your phone screen reflected in the lenses is a common cause of rejection. If you have any doubt, take them off — that is the safe choice.
Can I make a child's My Number photo the same way?
Yes. The spec is identical even for infants: front-facing, no hat, plain background. Since children struggle to stay still, take several frames and pick the one with eyes open and facing forward. The AI handles the background and positioning.
Can I reuse my passport photo as-is?
We don't recommend it. The finished size is 35×45mm for both My Number and the passport, but the rules for face position and margins differ. The same photo can pass for one and be rejected for the other. It is safer to refit to each spec.
Can I adjust a photo I already have without re-shooting?
Upload a photo you already took and the AI removes the background and sets the head position. Even if the face came out a little large, 0.1mm adjustment can often bring it back within spec.
