The exam is administered by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), and operated by the Japan Association for the Advancement of Medical Equipment (JAAME). The photo spec — 60mm tall × 40mm wide — is shared across medical national exams (nurse, radiological technologist, medical laboratory technologist, etc.). The 39th exam (March 1, 2026) had 2,396 candidates with a 65.7% pass rate — the second-worst in history and a 13-point drop year over year, making it the hardest sitting on record. There are over 70 accredited training schools nationwide (4-year universities and 3-year vocational schools, per JAAME's October 2025 list).
