Verbatim official spec

Below is the verbatim official text from IPA's (Information-technology Promotion Agency) FE CBT exam guide page, shown in the original Japanese.

  • 試験当日には、受験票②に写真(大きさ縦4cm×横3cm、脱帽、正面、上半身、6か月以内に撮影したもの)を必ず貼り付けて持参してください

Why this spec matters

The Fundamental Information Technology Engineer (FE) exam is the entry-level Japanese national IT certification, taken by roughly 70,000 people per year — many of them new graduates or career switchers. What makes FE distinct is that the photo is not checked at application time, but on exam day: you must paste the photo onto Admission Ticket #2 and bring it. Because FE is CBT and runs year-round, this is checked at the venue. IPA explicitly states that an unverifiable photo — for example, one taken with sunglasses or a mask — results in "you cannot take the exam". Because the check happens only on the day, there is no time to re-shoot or re-print if the photo fails.

How to create it for ¥200

A spec-compliant FE Admission Ticket #2 photo takes about two minutes with a smartphone and ¥200.

  1. 1

Take the photo on your smartphone

Stand against a plain wall in a bright room. No hat, upper body in frame, facing the camera directly. Remove sunglasses and masks, wear a collared or plain top, and keep a natural expression.
  2. 2

AI removes the background and aligns to spec

Upload the photo. AI removes the background, detects your face, and auto-crops to the 30mm × 40mm IPA aspect ratio. Fine-tune position to 0.1mm precision.
  3. 3

Print at any Japan convenience store via QR code

After payment, a QR code and 8-digit user number arrive by email. Print on L-size paper at 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson, Ministop, or Poplar from ¥30. Print and paste onto Admission Ticket #2 the day before the exam.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to bring on the FE CBT exam day?
Admission Ticket #2 (with the photo already pasted on) and a valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, My Number Card, etc.). You print Admission Ticket #2 yourself from the IPA my-page portal, paste a photo meeting the above spec, and bring it to the venue. IPA explicitly states that a missing photo prevents you from taking the exam, so confirm the paste-up the day before.
Is the photo handling the same as the Applied Information Technology Engineer (AP) exam?
No. Photo handling for the AP exam has been changing from FY2026 onward, with different rules tied to its PBT (paper-based) operation — always check the latest IPA notice. FE remains CBT with the "paste photo on Admission Ticket #2 and bring on exam day" rule as of 2026-05-26. Do not assume the two exams share identical photo rules.
Can I keep my glasses on?
Clear-lens glasses you normally wear are fine. However, IPA explicitly classes sunglasses and tinted lenses as "unverifiable" and exam-disqualifying, so remove tinted or transition lenses (those that darken outdoors) before shooting. For clear lenses, angle yourself to avoid reflections from light fixtures or phone screens on the eye area.
Can I use the same photo for multiple exams (FE, AP, driver's license, etc.)?
For exams sharing the same 30×40mm spec (e.g., Japan civil-servant exam), and as long as the photo is within 6 months of each application date, it is technically reusable. However, the FE Admission Ticket #2 requires pasting onto paper, while a driver's license submission has a different format — so it is safer to print fresh copies per use case. Our service lets you print multiple copies from one AI processing result.
Is color or black-and-white acceptable?
IPA does not explicitly prohibit either, but to avoid the "unverifiable photo" disqualification risk (the same standard applied to sunglasses/masks), color is the safe choice today. Our service outputs in color by default. Color conveys skin tone and complexion most naturally, which makes identity verification easiest.
