Why this spec matters

The Hygiene Manager (Eisei Kanrisha) exam has ~170,000 applicants per year, one of Japan's most popular national qualifications. Under the Industrial Safety and Health Act, every workplace with 50+ employees must appoint a Hygiene Manager, so demand spans nearly every industry. Photos are checked at the application stage and reused for ID verification on exam day — spec issues get the entire application bounced back, often too late to resubmit before the deadline. The 24×30mm size is smaller than most ID photos, and the unique "upper three-quarter body" (chest-up) framing means a standard headshot crop will not pass.

How to create it for ¥200

A JISHA-compliant Hygiene Manager exam photo takes about two minutes with a smartphone and ¥200.

  1. 1

Take the photo on your smartphone

Stand against a plain wall in a bright room. No hat, face the camera directly, and pull back so head, shoulders, and the upper chest are all in frame. Wear a collared shirt or suit.
  2. 2

AI removes the background and aligns to spec

Upload the photo. AI removes the background and detects your face and shoulder position. Auto-crops to the 24×30mm upper-torso framing with 0.1mm-precision fine-tuning.
  3. 3

Print at any Japan convenience store via QR code

After payment, a QR code and 8-digit user number arrive by email. Print on L-size paper at 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson, Ministop, or Poplar — from ¥30.

Frequently asked questions

Are the photo rules different for Type 1 and Type 2 Hygiene Manager exams?
No. Both Type 1 (all industries) and Type 2 (industries excluding hazardous work) use the same JISHA photo spec: 24×30mm, upper three-quarter body, no hat, taken within 6 months, plain background. The choice of exam type does not change the photo requirements.
What exactly is "upper three-quarter body" (上三分身) framing?
It means the photo shows from the top of the head down through the upper chest (around the breast-pocket line). It is a wider crop than a My Number-style face-centered shot (face length 32–36mm) — shoulders and a portion of the upper chest must be visible. On a photo booth, this corresponds roughly to the "resume" setting rather than the "ID card" setting.
Should I use color or black-and-white?
JISHA's official rules do not explicitly specify color or black-and-white. Color is the modern standard and makes ID verification easier, so we recommend color. To meet the "clear and not prone to fading" rule, printing at a convenience-store multifunction printer is more reliable than most home inkjets.
Does JISHA accept online applications with the same spec?
The Hygiene Manager exam is generally a paper application — you submit a printed form with the photo attached, either by mail or in person at a JISHA exam office. Whether you mail or hand-deliver, the same JISHA spec (24×30mm, upper torso, within 6 months) applies. Check www.exam.or.jp for the latest application procedure.
Can I wear glasses?
Clear-lens glasses you normally wear are fine. To meet the "clear" and "front-facing" rules, angle your face so that fluorescent lights or your phone screen do not reflect in the lenses. Sunglasses and tinted lenses are rejected because they obscure the eyes.
